Amma's Magic

A mother makes us who we are. She teaches us maths, science and English along with a good dosage of values, traditions, rituals, and if you are a girl some amount of cooking as well. For me my first teacher and my very first Guru is my mother. She taught me all she could, she taught me to laugh at myself and at difficult times, she taught me to be patient and diplomatic when the need arises, she taught me to be ME. And once she thought she had given me all her goodness, she smiled and passed away quietly into the night.
I broke down, cried, mourned and even silently screamed at her for leaving me. Then just as she taught me, I picked up my life and moved on.

Then one day as I sat talking to my Mother-in-law, it dawned on me that ‘a mother is a mother is a mother!’. How could I differentiate between my birth mother and a mother that my husband gave me. How could I add an ‘in-law’ to this beautiful relationship? As I sat talking to her and observing her, I saw a childlike impishness in her, a beauty beyond her weathered face, a heart bigger than her 5 foot something frame and creativity beyond comparison. She is a brilliant cook and works up her magic potion without ever grumbling. She is a wonderful sport and can laugh sheepishly at her own goof-ups. She is child and can cry at the drop of a hat at her follies. She is an artist and like a fairy godmother makes her ‘plain Jane’ children and grandchildren look a million bucks in her small budget creations. She is my husband’s mother and now more than ever she is MY MOTHER.

This blog is dedicated to her and her wonderful creations. Amma’s Magic for you.
